

Higher trims add some more comfort features, the availability of more options, and such things as sport leather seats, remote start, and LED lighting. Standard safety features come via the Ford Co-Pilot360 suite that includes blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, a lane-keeping system, and automatic emergency braking. Standard features are pretty basic and include an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and USB-A and USB-C ports. There’s also a decent amount of cargo space, particularly when you consider that the Bronco Sport is a compact SUV. A tall roof makes for good headroom front and back, but rear-seat legroom can be pretty tight. The cabin goes for a rugged yet comfortable look, and while it has a fair amount of hard plastic, the intention is to make it easier to clean. The base turbocharged 3-cylinder engine provides enough oomph to get it around, and there’s also a 250-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo 4-cylinder if you want more juice. On pavement, however, the ride is civilized and comfortable. Make no mistake, however, as the Bronco Sport is still a pretty decent off-roader in its own right, with standard all-wheel drive and a terrain management system that can be adjusted to fit whatever you’re driving through. This is partly because it’s intended as a more city-friendly all-arounder rather than its rugged off-road-focused brother. While the larger, tougher Bronco is sold with two doors or four, the 2022 Ford Bronco Sport is a 4-door only. The regular hybrid returns 44 mpg in the city, and the plug-in makes an impressive 105 MPGe along with a 37-mile battery-only range. The hybrid trims are equipped similarly to their gasoline counterparts, with both making 200 horsepower. Above that, the SEL adds simulated leather upholstery, the option of the larger engine, more safety features, and a 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.
Only $2,000 more gets you the more recommendable SE trim, with keyless entry, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, as well as optional all-wheel drive. The interior is rather bland, and we would strongly suggest avoiding the base S trim, which lacks not only Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration but has a rather tiny 4.2-inch infotainment screen.

Inside, the Escape is impressively roomy for a compact crossover, with 40.7 inches of maximum rear legroom and comfortable seats. The AWD option adds $1,500 to the sticker price. Most trims are available in all-wheel drive, although the base S trim and the plug-in hybrid are front-drive only. This engine is the only choice in the lower two trims, although the SEL is eligible for the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbo with considerably more juice.

Couple that with a ride focused primarily on comfort and the Escape isn’t terribly fun to drive. The worst thing is that the lower trims get a weak 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine. The best thing about the 2022 Ford Escape is that it’s offered with four engine choices, including a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid.
